
The former chief executive of the Royal Bank of Scotland, who has been vilified for presiding over its spectacular downfall yet still accepting a £700,000-a-year pension, is a keen golfer and lives in a six-bedroom Edwardian villa in Edinburgh, 40 minutes from the elite Royal and Ancient club.
After his retirement, the man nicknamed Fred the Shred found a proposer and seconder to nominate him for membership.
He is said to be furious at his rejection, according to RBS staff. A senior member said: 'The word that Sir Fred has been blackballed by St Andrews has gone round the bank like wildfire.
